Brendan Rodgers COL 2B
Rockies' Brendan Rodgers: Belts third homer
1h agoRodgers went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday.
Rodgers brought the Rockies to within 4-2 with his solo blast in the sixth inning, but that was the final run the team was able to muster. The long ball was his third of the campaign, all of which have come over his past seven games. Rodgers is slashing .310/.333/.690 over that stretch as he puts together a strong end to a mostly lost season -- he didn't play until late July due to a shoulder injury he suffered during spring training.

James Outman LAD CF
Dodgers' James Outman: Racks up three more hits
1h agoOutman went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, a double, a walk and two total runs against Colorado in an 8-2 win Wednesday.
Following an 0-for-4 performance in Game 1 of a doubleheader Tuesday, Outman was batting just .171 with no multi-hit performances through 22 games in September. He's turned things around considerably since then, tallying seven hits over his past 10 at-bats to lift his season batting average back up to .252. The rookie outfielder has added 23 homers, 69 RBI, 85 runs and 15 stolen bases in a fine rookie campaign, nailing down a near-everyday role in center field in the process.
-
Freddie Freeman LAD 1B
Dodgers' Freddie Freeman: Goes deep again Wednesday
1h agoFreeman went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a stolen base in Wednesday's 8-2 win over the Rockies.
Freeman put the game out of reach for the Dodgers in the eighth inning with a 412-foot, three-run shot to right field. It was his second homer in as many days following a 23-game stretch during which he went deep just once. Freeman's three RBI in the win pushed his total to 101 on the campaign, marking his second straight triple-digit RBI season and the fourth of his big-league career. He's also tallied a career-high 23 thefts while belting 28 long balls, scoring 128 runs and posting a standout .333/.412/.368 slash line over 713 plate appearances.

Noah Davis COL SP
Rockies' Noah Davis: Takes loss against Los Angeles
1h agoDavis (0-4) took the loss against the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four batters over 4.1 innings.
Davis made it through two scoreless frames before giving up a solo homer to James Outman in the third. The right-hander still entered the fifth inning in a tight 1-1 contest, but he allowed six of the seven batters he reached in that frame to reach base, with his only out coming on a sacrifice fly. All of that traffic led to three Los Angeles runs and the fourth defeat of the campaign for Davis. This was presumably his last appearance of the campaign, as he threw 86 pitches. If that's the case, Davis will finish with an 8.70 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 26:15 K:BB over 30 innings in his first extended look in the majors.

Emmet Sheehan LAD SP
Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan: Racks up career-high 10 punchouts
2h agoSheehan (4-1) earned the win over Colorado on Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out 10 batters over six innings.
Sheehan induced 20 swinging strikes in the outing, taming the Coors Field disadvantage by keeping the Rockies from making consistent contact. The rookie hurler did serve up two home runs, but they were both of the solo variety and accounted for the only runs of the game against him. Sheehan turned heads with 102 punchouts over 63 frames in the minors this season, but he struck out just 30 batters over his initial 38.1 frames in the big leagues. He appears to have turned a corner in that regard, fanning 34 batters over his past 22 innings with Los Angeles, including 19 in 10.2 frames across his past two starts. Sheehan's late-season improvement has made him a consideration for the Dodgers' postseason roster -- if he makes it, he could function either as a fourth starter or as a piggyback or long-relief option.

The backstop went 14 contests without a long ball between Aug. 25 and Sept. 17 but has now gone deep twice in his past four games. Jeffers already has a career-best 42 RBI this season, and he needs one more homer before the end of the campaign to tie his career-high mark of 14.

Edouard Julien MIN 2B
Twins' Edouard Julien: Belts 15th homer
2h agoJulien went 2-for-4 with a solo home run against the A's in Wednesday's 6-4 victory.
Julien began the Twins' half of the first inning with a bang, smacking a solo shot to right field. The long ball snapped an 0-for-11 stretch over his past four games and was his first extra-base hit since Sept. 17. Though he's somewhat faded down the stretch, Julien has still produced a solid .262/.380/.452 slash line with 15 homers, 33 RBI, 58 runs and three stolen bases through 393 plate appearances in his first season in the majors.

He's been hitting well of late, collecting five multi-hit efforts over his past 13 games and batting .340 (17-for-50) with two homers, six RBI, 13 runs and a stolen base over that span. The late-season surge has lifted his batting average to .258 on the campaign, which is on pace to be a career-best mark.
-
Michael Brantley HOU LF
Astros' Michael Brantley: Four hits in return
3h agoBrantley went 4-for-5 with a double, one RBI and one run scored in Wednesday's 8-3 win over the Mariners.

He's batting .319 over 13 contests this season while adding two homers, seven RBI, seven runs scored and two doubles. The 36-year-old hasn't attempted a stolen base in his limited action.
-
Tyler Fitzgerald SF CF
Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Swipes two bags
3h agoFitzgerald went 1-for-3 with a walk, one RBI and two stolen bases in Wednesday's 5-2 extra-inning loss to the Padres.
The pair of steals were Fitzgerald's first thefts in the majors. He's hitting .273 (6-for-22) with two walks, one home run, four RBI and two runs scored across his first seven big-league games. He's been a steady presence in center field and should close out the year in a starting role.
-
Evan Carter TEX CF
Rangers' Evan Carter: Homers in win
4h agoCarter went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk in Wednesday's 5-0 win over the Angels.
Carter is up to five homers since his call-up Sept. 8, and four of those long balls have come over his last seven games. He padded the Rangers' lead in the ninth inning with his blast Wednesday. The rookie outfielder has adjusted well to the majors, hitting .320 with a 1.146 OPS, 12 RBI, 14 runs scored and three stolen bases over 61 plate appearances. Carter should be able to maintain a strong-side platoon role into the postseason if the Rangers clinch a spot.
-

Rangers' Adolis Garcia: Knocks in two runs
4h agoGarcia went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and an RBI double in Wednesday's 5-0 win over the Angels.

He provided the Rangers' early offense Wednesday, opening the scoring with an RBI double in the first inning before hitting a solo shot two frames later. The outfielder is up to 38 long balls, 106 RBI, 106 runs scored, nine stolen bases, 29 doubles and a .245/.326/.508 slash line through 144 contests overall.
-
Noah Davis COL SP

Sheehan's late-season improvement has made him a consideration for the Dodgers' postseason roster -- if he makes it, he could function either as a fourth starter or as a piggyback or long-relief option.
-
Joey Estes OAK SP
Athletics' Joey Estes: Fans five in final start
2h agoEstes worked 5.1 innings in a no-decision against Minnesota on Wednesday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five batters.
Estes was shaky early, giving up a solo homer to Edouard Julien in the first inning and yielding another run in the second. The right-hander mostly settled in from there, holding the Twins scoreless across the third to fifth frames before being charged with another run following his departure in the sixth. Estes threw 75 pitches in the start, so this was presumably his final appearance of the campaign. If that's the case, he'll finish with 7.20 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 7:2 K:BB over 10 innings during his first taste of the majors. He'll look to earn a rotation spot coming out of spring training in 2024.
-
Pablo Lopez MIN SP
Twins' Pablo Lopez: Takes no-decision Wednesday
2h agoLopez allowed three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six batters over 4.1 innings in a no-decision against Oakland on Wednesday.
Lopez was handed an early two-run lead before giving up his first run in the third frame. The right-hander responded with a scoreless fourth but was lifted after giving up consecutive one-out hits in the fifth. Both of those runners came around to score after Lopez's departure, resulting his his mediocre final line. On a positive note, Lopez stuck out six batters to end up with 234 on the campaign, the most by a Twins pitcher since Johan Santana struck out 235 in 2007. Assuming this was his final regular-season appearance, Lopez complemented the punchout total with a 3.66 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 194 frames covering 32 starts. HIs next trip to the mound should come in the AL Wild Card round, which begins next Tuesday.
-
Wade Miley MIL SP
Brewers' Wade Miley: Solid over five frames Wednesday
3h agoMiley allowed one run on six hits and one walk while striking out two batters over five innings in a no-decision against St. Louis on Wednesday.
Miley yielded a run in the second frame but otherwise kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard in another strong outing. The left-hander has given up one or zero runs in three of his past four starts, posting a 2.21 ERA over 20.1 innings during that stretch. Miley's 14:8 K:BB during that period isn't very impressive, but he's pitching well enough to be a solid option should the Brewers need a fourth starter in the playoffs. The veteran hurler finished the regular season with a strong 3.14 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 79:38 K:BB over 120.1 frames.
-
Bryce Miller SEA SP
Mariners' Bryce Miller: Falters in fourth inning
3h agoMiller (8-7) allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four over four innings, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Astros.
Miller was solid through three innings, but he gave up a solo shot to Yordan Alvarez and a three-run home run to Mauricio Dubon in the fourth. Miller has faded toward the end of the campaign, allowing 15 runs over his last 18.2 innings, including four homers over his last two starts. He's likely done for the regular season with a 4.32 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 119:26 K:BB through 131.1 innings over 25 starts in his rookie year.
-
Jacob Barnes STL RP
Cardinals' Jacob Barnes: Takes loss Wednesday
2h agoBarnes (0-1) allowed one run on one hit over two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Brewers.
Barnes got the last two outs of the sixth inning with no trouble but put a runner on in the seventh, and Matthew Liberatore couldn't prevent the go-ahead run from scoring. Barnes has worked in a low-leverage role with the Cardinals, pitching to a 7.15 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 6:3 K:BB over 11.1 innings across 11 appearances this season after he was called up Aug. 22.

Griffin Jax MIN RP
Twins' Griffin Jax: Secures fourth save
2h agoJax picked up a save against the Athletics on Wednesday by striking out the only batter he faced.
Jhoan Duran worked the seventh inning Wednesday, giving Dallas Keuchel and Jax an opportunity to cover the final two frames. Keuchel pitched a scoreless eighth but put two runners on base in the ninth to bring the winning run to the plate, prompting Jax's entrance. Jax answered the call, striking out rookie phenom Zack Gelof to end the threat and notch his fourth save of the season. Two of those saves have come over his past three outings, but Duran's closer role is secure, so Jax should work primarily as a high-leverage setup option in the playoffs.

Zack Thompson STL RP
Cardinals' Zack Thompson: Logs no-decision Wednesday
2h agoThompson pitched 5.1 innings against Milwaukee on Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out five batters over 5.1 innings.
Thompson carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth frame but couldn't make the advantage stand up. He gave up consecutive doubles to begin the inning, resulting in the Brewers' first run, then saw the game-tying run cross the plate on a one-out fielder's choice. That tally was unearned due to a previous throwing error behind him, but it was nonetheless enough to move Thompson out of position for a win. This was presumably Thompson's final appearance of the campaign, and he finishes with a 4.34 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 72:25 K:BB over 66.1 frames, with nine of his 25 appearances coming as a starter.

Devin Williams MIL RP
Brewers' Devin Williams: Posts 36th save
2h agoWilliams recorded a save against the Cardinals on Wednesday, walking two batters and striking out one in a scoreless and hitless inning.
Williams had some trouble with his control, throwing just nine of 19 pitches for strikes and walking a pair of batters while tasked with protecting a one-run lead. Both of the free passes came with two outs, but the right-handed reliever was able to steer around the danger by getting Jordan Walker to fly out to end the contest. This was Williams' first appearance in 10 days and his first save since Sept. 15. With six straight scoreless outings during which he's 4-for-4 in save opportunities, Williams looks primed for the postseason.

John Brebbia SF RP
Giants' John Brebbia: No help from defense Wednesday
3h agoBrebbia (3-4) took the extra-inning loss Wednesday versus the Padres, allowing three unearned runs on one hit and one walk over one inning.
Brebbia's ugly end to the campaign continued -- he's given up eight runs (four earned) over his last five outings, taking losses in each of the last four. He got two outs to start the 10th inning, but a sacrifice fly brought in a run before an error allowed the Padres to extend their rally. Brebbia is at a 3.55 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 46:13 K:BB through 38 innings this season. With the Giants having three games left against the Dodgers, Brebbia's struggles are unlikely to go away before the season ends.

Sean Manaea SF RP
Giants' Sean Manaea: Strong in no-decision
3h agoManaea allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out eight without walking a batter over six innings in a no-decision versus the Padres on Wednesday.
Manaea rejoined the rotation Sept. 12, and over his last four starts, he's maintained an 18:2 K:BB over 24 innings. He wasn't able to pick up a third straight win, but he earned a second straight quality start. The southpaw had his ups and downs while moving between the rotation and bullpen during the year, but he's posted a respectable 4.44 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 128:42 K:BB over 117.2 innings overall. This was likely his last start of the campaign, and after throwing 100 pitches (67 strikes), it seems improbable that he'd be able to make a relief appearance over the weekend.

Yordan Alvarez HOU DH
Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Pummels another homer
3h agoAlvarez went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, two walks and an additional run scored in Wednesday's 8-3 win over the Mariners.
Alvarez's homer was his third in the last four games and his 31st of the year. The slugger's blast went to deep center field to tie the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning. He's up to a .293/.409/.591 slash line with 97 RBI, 76 runs scored and 24 doubles through 111 contests this season.

Bryce Harper PHI DH
Phillies' Bryce Harper: Three extra-base hits in win
4h agoHarper went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a solo home run and a stolen base in Wednesday's 7-6 win over Pittsburgh.
After logging a pair of doubles earlier in the game, Harper provided the eventual winning run with a 427-foot homer off Jose Hernandez in the seventh inning. The 30-year-old Harper has been on fire down the stretch, going 9-for-18 with a pair of homers in his last six games. He's boosted his slash line to .296/.402/.503 with 21 homers, 84 runs scored, 72 RBI and 11 steals across 540 plate appearances this season.

Jorge Soler MIA DH
Marlins' Jorge Soler: Idle for nightcap
8h agoSoler isn't in the Marlins' lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Mets, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
After an 0-for-4 performance to begin the day, Soler will ride the pine to begin the second game of Wednesday's twin bill. Jake Burger will serve as Miami's DH while Jon Berti starts at third base.
-
Christopher Morel CHC DH
Cubs' Christopher Morel: Out of Wednesday's lineup
11h agoMorel is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game in Atlanta.
Morel will sit Wednesday while stuck in a 3-for-26 slump, though he did hit two solo homers during that stretch. Jeimer Candelario (back) is starting at first base in his return from the injured list while Miles Mastrobuoni mans the hot corner.
-
Jonathan Aranda TB DH
Rays' Jonathan Aranda: Three hits in win
18h agoAranda went 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one run scored in Tuesday's victory over the Red Sox.
It was an encouraging performance from Aranda, who began the day in a 2-for-28 (.071) slump with no extra-base hits in that span. The 25-year-old infielder is now slashing .211/.330/.316 with just one homer, 12 runs scored and seven RBI through 91 plate appearances on the campaign. While he won't offer much offensively, Aranda should see fairly regular at-bats against right-handed pitching with Brandon Lowe (knee) out.

Byron Buxton MIN DH
Twins' Byron Buxton: Moves workouts to Minneapolis
1d agoBuxton (knee) will work out with the Twins this week with the minor-league season over as Minnesota evaluates him for a possible addition to the postseason roster, MLB.com reports. He went 1-for-8 during two games at Triple-A St. Paul last weekend.
It seems unlikely he'll be activated from the injured list ahead of the playoffs, especially with the Twins playing their final series on the road in Colorado. Buxton's last rehab stint in early September was shut down after two games due to a flareup of the patella tendinitis in his right knee. It's encouraging he made it through two games over the weekend without a setback, but he didn't play in the field and didn't get much work due to a rainout in St. Paul. He may not be activated for the postseason roster as a result. It's hard to see how the Twins could elect to use him in center field in the playoffs even though that was probably the plan when his first rehab stint started in early September.
